Wedding Party Roles

In the midst of planning for your wedding? Wondering who will do what? To help you out, here's a glossary of wedding roles.

Acolyte Acolytes (also called altar servers or altar boys or girls) are primarily used at Catholic weddings. They light candles, and might also carry wine or water to assist the priest.

Bell Ringer A Bell Ringer is usually around 2-8 years old, and can be either a little girl or a little boy. Bell ringers are a great choice if you have lots of young children you'd like to include in your wedding. Bell ringers can skip down the aisle ringing bells and shouting The bride is coming! The bride is coming!"

Best Man Some of his duties include getting the groom to the wedding ceremony, holding the bride's wedding ring, and signing the couple's marriage license.

Bible Bearer The Bible bearer holds The Bible aloft during the processional.

Bridesmaids A support team for the maid of honor. They help with pre-wedding tasks that could include addressing wedding invitations, planning a bachelorette party, and more.

Bridesman A bridesman is a male friend of the bride, and walks down the aisle in the traditional place of a bridesmaid.

Candle Lighter In some wedding ceremonies pre-teens aged 9 through 12 light candles at the altar - right before the mother of the bride is seated.

Chief Bridesmaid This is the UK equivalent to the Maid of Honor.

Father of the Bride - For a traditional wedding, the main role of the bride's father is the honor of walking her down the aisle and "giving her away" to the groom. He might also have other tasks like airport duty, coordinating directions to the wedding site, etc. Traditionally, the parents of the bride pay for the wedding.

Father of the Groom - Traditionally the groom's parents host and pay for the rehearsal dinner.

Flower Girls (or Boys!) Usually little ones aged three through eight. They walk down the aisle ahead of the bride, and scatter flower petals from a basket. Usually little girls fill this role, but cute little boys can do this task as well.

Greeters People that greet people as they arrive at the wedding ceremony. In addition, greeters usually hand out wedding programs.

Groomsmen Some of the pre-wedding tasks groomsmen may do is throw a bachelor party, and assist the groom to get ready for the wedding ceremony. The groomsmen will also typically seat guests as they enter the ceremony venue.

Guest Book Attendant Duties are to greet guests and ensure that they sign the guest book.

Junior Bridesmaids Usually ages 9-16. They can attend all the major functions excluding x-rated bachelorette and bachelor parties. They can wear more demure versions of the bridesmaid dresses.

Junior Groomsmen Usually ages 9-16. They can attend all the major functions excluding x-rated bachelorette and bachelor parties. They can also wear tuxes like the groomsmen.

Maid/Matron/Man of Honor This role is the bride's right-hand during all stages of wedding plan. Usually the maid of honor handles the bridal shower, and can also handle wedding details like holding the bride's bouquet during wedding vows, etc. She also helps the bride get dressed. She is the last one to walk down the aisle before the bride, and she holds the groom's wedding band on her thumb. The variations on this role include:
- Maid of Honor
- Maid of Honour (in the U.K. and Australia)
- Man of Honor

Mother of the Bride In addition to being a caring listener and a daughter's chief cheerleader, some of the tasks a Mother of the Bride might do include helping to find a wedding dress, help look for wedding and reception locations, and draw up a guest list for her side of the family.

Mother of the Groom Some of the tasks the Mother of the Groom might do include hosting a dinner to introduce the bride to the groom's side of the family, and plan and host the rehearsal dinner along with the groom's dad.

Officiant The person who officiates the marriage ceremony making it legal and binding.

Pages or Train Bearers Page Boys (or girls) usually up to 7 years of age, and follow the bride down the aisle carrying her bridal train. Pages are also the British equivalent of an American Ring Bearer

- Page Boy
- Page Girl

Reader A person who reads a passage during the marriage ceremony.

Ring Bearer The ring bearer is usually a small boy between 4-8 years old, and he walks down the aisle just before the flower girl. Usually the rings attached to the pillow are fakes. If you do choose to use real ones, have someone hand him the pillow with the rings tied to it right before it's time for him to walk down the aisle. It's a good idea to include your ring bearer during the wedding rehearsal so he understands his role ahead of time.

Usher People who greet the wedding guests as they arrive and ensure they're seated in the correct spot. The U.K. equivalent of Groomsman.
